This afternoon we got a call from Ethan who was about a mile out of town ,and he said a big bird had dropped from a tree in front of his car onto the road. It's a narrow road that you have to drive slowly on and has water on both sides, which is high right now from all the rain. He stopped the car (the bird didn't move out of the way) and got out to see what it was. It turned out to be a baby owl! As he shooed it off the road his eye caught another one in the grass right on the edge of the road. There didn't appear to be a parent anywhere around and due to the high water there was not much area for them to be safe in the grass, so Ken went there with a big box and brought them here. There is a bird rehab facility a mile from here so we called and they said to bring them over. The lady there looked at them and said they were Barred owls, probably a male and a female. We got to watch her take two mice from the fridge, rip their heads off (!) with her bare hands, and feed the babies. She had to kind of poke it down their throats, I guess like the parent would do. She put them in a big cage and will probably try to release them when they are old enough. They seemed to be in good health. Ethan felt good for doing a good deed and it turned out to be very educational too.
