This weekend was the bi-annual (once every two years?) cheese days event held in Monroe, WI. We have been two times before and were really looking forward to going again this year. Ken had talked it up with several other families so much that others came from miles around to attend this with us. We even had our friends from Congerville, the Dunns, come Saturday and stay overnight so they could be here bright and early for the festivities.
Nineteen of us met at 7:30 am for breakfast at a nearby diner and then it was off to Cheese Days! We managed to get seperated from the 7 car convoy as we entered Monroe so we parked and wandered to the town square where we met up with everyone else. Then it was off to the cheese tent to sample as many cheeses as our hearts desired from the many companies that had products on display. The habanero cheese was just as hot as the label said it was! Mariah found out that Limburger cheese tastes as bad as it smells! We had to hurry off and buy ice cream to try and get the taste out of her mouth (and well, just because we wanted ice cream!). After all the samples we discovered we really like the ones we buy on a regular basis at the grocery store and only Alex and Mariah bought cheese. It's called Fry Cheese because you fry it in a skillet and it tastes like the top of a pizza!
On we went on our quest to find chocolate covered, frozen, cheesecake on a stick! For only .50 it's a real bargain. We had to take a break at that point and rest in the hospitality tent with some water. Got to let that cheese settle! We all got our blood pressure checked at the booth next to the hospitality tent where the local hospital was doing it for free. It would appear that cheese is good for lowering the blood pressure, since we all had pretty good readings.
The heat was rising by this point and the crowd was increasing and somehow we managed to loose three from the group and never found them again! After several calls to their phones we found out that they had headed for home and the cool comfort they would find there. It really was getting warm and there is not much shade.
After some more snacks the rest of the groups decided to head for home as well and left us and one friend to watch the three hour parade. Unfortunately our chairs were in the sun so we baked for the first 1 1/4 hour until the shade of the buildings covered us. I must have been tired because I managed to fall asleep during this time! Finally the combination of the slow parade and the heat took it's toll and we decided to cut out before the parade ended and the 15,000 people there decided to leave!
After a quick stop at a favorite store in Monroe to pick up some good Bergoff beer (and a coconut for Mariah) it was time to head for home. We arrived with two sleeping kids in the car and one tired momma!
It was a really fun weekend, full of good food and fun with good friends!
